An eye-opening book revealing the harsh realities faced by those seeking better lives through dangerous migration paths.
In the wake of the migrant and asylum crisis affecting European countries, and the influx of illegal migrants enduring harrowing experiences across the Sahara Desert with high hopes of reaching Europe, an underestimated number of migrants are dying exponentially. Others are being used as slaves and harassed across North African countries. "Deadly Voyage" is a thought-provoking book that explores the perilous journey of migrants seeking greener pastures. This project was packaged to sensitise the young people, parents and general public on the perilous paths of illegal migration.
Deadly Voyage: A Dangerous Path to Greener Pastures John, a young high school graduate from a privileged Lagos family, embarked on a perilous journey to Liberia in 1997, seeking economic opportunities amidst Charles Taylor's rise to power. Unknown to his parents, John joined fellow adventurers, Dayo and Emeka, viewing the war-torn country as a mere transit point to the West. Their high expectations were quickly shattered by harsh realities. Their search for prosperity led them across the treacherous landscape of Liberia and into Sierra Leone’s jungle, where they faced police harassment and dangerous rebel encounters. This ordeal led to a critical decision, forcing the team to split before the final, desperate push toward Europe via Libya. Their odyssey was marked by continuous life-threatening circumstances: evasion of desert bandits, confrontation with Gaddafi's forces, and a perilous boat ride across the Mediterranean. John suffered serious injuries, lost friends, and endured trauma, eventually being repatriated to Lagos after a harrowing boat mishap near the coast of Italy. Meanwhile, Dayo’s journey took a darker turn, ending with him (being) imprisoned for a drug-related offense he knew nothing about.
